Learn more about FlexConnect for Solar
A flexible interconnection allows solar projects to connect to the grid without requiring costly upgrades by dynamically adjusting generation during periods of grid congestion. This approach uses real-time data and operating parameters to ensure safe operation while maximizing the amount of energy your project can deliver to the grid. Flexible interconnections enable faster, more cost-effective connections, helping developers get their projects online sooner.
By deploying sensors, leveraging best-available utility data, forecasting grid capacity, and generating dynamic operating envelopes, FlexConnect eliminates the bottlenecks of traditional interconnections. This accelerates the utility approval process and allows developers to start generating revenue 6-18 months sooner.
Our solution includes the deployment of line sensors that collect real-time data on grid conditions and capacity. These sensors are rapidly deployed and provide the necessary data to provide accurate, actionable insights. Utility approval is required for the deployment of these sensors.
An alternative approach can utilize SCADA or AMI and grid connectivity data from the utility to monitor grid conditions. This is typically slower due to utility IT deployment hurdles. However, once deployed it becomes available to most or all sites within a utility's service territory.
By setting clear, day-ahead dynamic operating envelopes, our product ensures that PV generation operates safely within grid limits while reducing unnecessary curtailment. Performance visibility helps identify and address any issues quickly to keep projects running optimally.
Absolutely. Flexible interconnections provide a mix of firm and flexible capacity. The firm capacity ensures the same reliability as a static interconnection, while the flexible capacity adds bonus generation and revenue, enhancing project returns and making these projects attractive to underwriters and financiers.
Currently, FlexConnect is available for distribution-connected solar projects, which typically range from 50 kW to 10 MW. While flexible interconnection approaches can work for transmission-connected projects, additional criteria must be met.
