Working at Camus Energy

Hopefully you read about Camus (pronounced KEH-moo) from our website already; we're a seed-stage software startup, working to transition electrical grids to zero carbon generation. We have offices in San Francisco and Campbell, California. Obviously we're biased, but we think Camus is a great place to work, and we have reasons:

  1. Mission: working on such a mighty challenge is addictively fulfilling. Reversing climate change is the largest human challenge of the 21st century, so a sense of motivation comes easily. Even after just a few months, none of us could imagine going back to our old jobs, or a mobile app, or ad optimization.
  2. People: the team simply has great humans and a great culture. None of us is perfect, although we practice the golden rule, intentionally maintain a growth mindset, and prioritize wellbeing. We keep it real with open, honest communication, bolstered by self awareness and compassion.
  3. Opportunity: the electric power industry needs more strong software engineering teams, and badly. Open source, iterative development, and human centered design are almost completely absent today, and most experts agree that grids are at least 20 years behind "consumer tech" (e.g. Google). We can change this.
  4. Joy: both because the work is dynamic and interesting, and because the atmosphere is playful, we really have fun every day. Without being too crunchy, Camus has a spirit of excitement and character. What we're not is peppy; most of us are closet introverts, like our mascot, the most chill capybara.

Honestly, there are some drawbacks to working at a scrappy startup; we don't have bountiful microkitchens, stunning salaries, or rock solid job stability. But overall, we think you'll be glad if you join our team. If you think you might, send us a Yo, and we'll find a time for you to visit our headquarters for a tour and chat. Each visitor will receive a free taco.

Software Engineer / Humble Leader

Camus has a great spot for an experienced generalist, who can drive a development team. One part of the gig is designing systems and inventing software solutions to electrical grid challenges*. The other part is organizing, inspiring, and coaching a small team of coders with various specializations.

Please send us your résumé if this sounds like you:

And please mention any of these for bonus points:

This role includes roughly 2-4 weeks of travel per year, including both conferences and customer site visits.

Software Engineer / Avid Learner

If you want to apply your software development expertise while growing new talents, Camus might be a good place for you. You'd be on a small team, building systems for some of our first customers, most of which are electrical utilities*. If the following sounds like you, please get in touch:

Some questions which might help you add sprinkles to your first email:

We believe in growth and development for folks on our teams throughout their career, and are committed to working with you on growing both technical and leadership skills. (And we hope you’ll work with us on ours!) You should expect this role to grow into a leadership role as the team grows.

This role includes roughly 1-2 weeks of travel per year, including both conferences and customer site visits.

Graphic Designer / Relentless Creator

Are you a freelancer with a talent for data visualization and user interface design, and want to help decarbonize the grid*? If so, Camus would love to plug you into our team! Working alongside coders, you will design the UIs for our first products, allowing grid operators to grok their grids in real-time. Pretty please drop us a line if you think of yourself as:

Backend experience is also good for bonus points, particularly coding in Go or Python, and deploying on GCP. The gig will start with mock-ups and rapid prototyping, and transition to an iterative production cycle. Specifically, we want you to:

We need at least 2 months of your time, although we're quite flexible on hours. We'll gladly pay hourly, at a rate appropriate for your experience. We'll ask for a portfolio or samples, and references.

Frontend Engineer / Browser Maestro

Camus has a really unique opportunity to build web apps for literal power users. You'd design and implement interfaces from scratch, from residential consumers and grid control room operators*. It's a contract gig, full-time and flexible, with a minimum term of four months. If you read the following and think, "hey, that's me," then please shoot us an email.

And please mention any of these for bonus points:

Travel is optional, most likely to Taos, New Mexico. If you're into winter sports, this is definitely a perk!

* Specific experience with electrical power service is not necessary for any of our software engineering roles. Most of us knew very little about the industry when we started, so we're happy to help you learn what we learned. You'll be up to speed in a few months, tops.
